Transportation Unit

Russ Pope has been drawing and skateboarding since he was five, when his dad cut him a board out of an old cupboard. At twenty-two he wrote a business plan for a skateboard company, dropped out of school when NHS agreed to back it, and that company was Creature. Scarecrow came next, then years of brand work at Vans and Converse, then gallery shows on three continents. Transportation Unit is the one he kept for himself. All the art is his, and he has said he keeps the company small on purpose.

What got our attention is something he has said about his own work. He wants art to be reachable, and he is direct about galleries having a barrier to entry that keeps plenty of people out. So his drawings turn up in books, on murals, on shirts and coffee bags, and on these. Pressed maple, stain running through the plies, no two boards coming out the same color. Same drawing either way. This one you can stand on.
